Burak M. Ozgur, M.D. views minimally invasive spine surgery as a state of mind — a conscious decision and deliberate effort made by the surgeon to preserve as much native tissue as possible without compromising the surgical goal.

The double-board certified neurosurgeon, whose impressive background includes a rare dual orthopedic surgery-neurosurgery spine fellowship, has built his practice embracing what he calls a “look, listen and feel” approach to the spine. He prides himself in taking the time to listen to patients and fully delve into their unique cases.

Whenever possible, Dr. Ozgur favors conservative and non-surgical therapies for spine ailments, and employs minimally invasive techniques when surgery is required. As a result of his philosophy and techniques, Dr. Ozgur is able to develop personalized treatment plans that result in less pain, minimal blood loss, fewer complications and a quicker recovery for his patients.

It is this customized, comprehensive and conservative approach that makes Dr. Ozgur the perfect fit to lead the new Orange County facility of DISC Sports and Spine Center (DISC). With a focus on minimally invasive spine procedures and advanced arthroscopic techniques, DISC was founded on the vision of delivering an unparalleled patient experience for those suffering from sports injuries, orthopedic issues and spine disorders.

Dr. Ozgur has authored over 27 articles in peer-reviewed publications, including Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, Spine Journal, and Journal of Clinical Neuroscience. He has made 94 presentations at various venues, has written several book chapters, and recently published a surgical textbook, Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery: A Practical Guide to Anatomy and Techniques in 2009. He has also authored topics including “Discectomy and Laminectomy” and “Combining Techniques for Multilevel Disease and Degenerative Scoliosis” in addition to chapters addressing XLIF, TLIF and DLIF.

Dr. Ozgur is a member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Society of Lateral Access Surgery (SOLAS), American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP), North American Spine Society (NASS), American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), as well as the AANS/CNS Spine Section.

A California native, Dr. Ozgur received his Bachelor degree from the University of California, Irvine and his medical degree from the University of Vermont, College of Medicine. He completed a general surgery internship, neurosurgical residency and a combined orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center.

In addition to his directorship at DISC, Dr. Ozgur maintains full staff privileges as an attending neurosurgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. He previously served as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Director of Spinal Neurosurgery, and Co-director of the University of California, Irvine Comprehensive Spine Program.
