DISC Sports & Spine Center Congratulates the 21 DISC-Treated U.S. Olympians Who Competed in the London Games
Group Includes Nine U.S. Olympic Medalists Who Won a Combined 12 Medals
Los Angeles – August 27, 2012 – DISC Sports & Spine Center (DISC) proudly congratulates all of the athletes who were treated by its sports medicine team before representing the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games. In total, DISC helped 21 U.S. Olympians recover from injury and/or overcome adversity leading up to the XXX Olympiad.
Below are highlights of nine of these athletes who together earned 12 medals:
- Kerri Walsh Jennings and partner Misty May-Treanor won their third consecutive gold medal in beach volleyball. Both took advantage of DISC’s groundbreaking sports psychology sessions through Dr. Michael Gervais.
- Swimmer Jessica Hardy won gold in the 4x100 medley relay and bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay. Hardy’s treatments included sports psychology, as well as strength training and soft tissue mobilization via DISC’s Soft Tissue Center, directed by Dr. Horrigan.
- Swimmer Eric Shanteau won gold in the 4x100m medley relay. Returning to Olympic competition after defeating testicular cancer, Shanteau also benefitted from DISC’s sports psychology services and received preventative treatment from the Soft Tissue Center.
- Sprinter Ryan Bailey won silver in the 4x100m relay. Bailey’s care at DISC included frequent treatments in the Soft Tissue Center.
- Hurdler Jason Richardson won silver in the 110m hurdles. Richardson [utilized Soft Tissue Center treatments at DISC to aid his recovery and prevent future knee injuries.
- Swimmer Ricky Berens earned gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay and silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay. As part of his injury prevention plan, Berens sought conservative care at DISC’s Soft Tissue Center.
- Rebecca Soni swam to two World Records in the 200m breaststroke and 4x100m medley and also won silver in the100m breaststroke. Soni attended sports psychology sessions and received conservative care from DISC’s Soft Tissue Center.
- Scott Gault won bronze in the men’s four rowing competition. Before making it to London, he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery at DISC and received conservative spine care for a bulged disc.
