With children soon to be out of school, now is the time for parents to make themselves aware of the various unique injury hazards that their kids may be subject to when they take part in outdoor activities. There are two things in particular that should top the list of their concerns: heat stroke and concussions.
A new report out of Detroit finds doctors exploring these issues and offering some important advice. Many parents may think that concussions are for the most part limited to the football field. But think about the many things that a child could get up to during the summer months: they could organize various games, with football only one of many in which contact could be made and a concussion could occur. If your child bikes anywhere, or rolls around the neighborhood on a skateboard or a pair of roller blades, he or she is also going to be at risk for a concussion.
Considering the serious threat these could pose, make sure to talk to your kids about the danger, and when it comes to various means of locomotion, insist upon the usage of a helmet.
Also understand when your child needs to take a break so as to avoid heat stroke. Set a rule requiring that they take regular breaks to come inside and drink some water. And although activity is great for a child, a day inside playing videogames actually won’t hurt them when the temperature gets into the triple digits. Heat is nothing to trifle with.
