Traveling For The Holidays Is No Excuse For Avoiding Exercise

With the holidays around the corner, this is the time of the year when exercise grows rather lax.  Not only is someone who just ate a plate full of turkey and mashed potatoes not all that interested in getting out of the chair and running a few miles, but travelers heading to their families’ places all around the country may find it difficult to find an appropriate time and place for a suitable exercise regimen.

Working out while traveling can seem like a chore, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar environment where you don’t know where a gym is.  Plus, the weather may preclude you from engaging in the type of regimen you would normally execute outside.  A new report out of Philadelphia offers some exercise tips for travelers, and if the holidays are taking you away from your optimum exercise space, you might consider the advice on hand.

Planning ahead is a great way to ensure that you’re going to be able to carve out enough time to get a workout in.  If you’re going to be visiting relatives for a week, then figure out those times when you’re not going to be with them and schedule some workouts.  Plot out what gym you’re going to use ahead of time, even if that means the gym at the hotel you’re staying in.  By planning ahead, you won’t be tempted to put off the workout when some excuse pops up; instead, the workout becomes the excuse.

Most gyms have branches across the country, so planning ahead also ensures that you’ll have your membership ready to go.  Conduct research online to find a gym near where you’re going to be.

If such a gym is not going to be available, then it sometimes might be up to you to set things up in a way that allows for a workout.  You might even be able to turn your own hotel room into a workout area.  Most stretches take nothing more than an ample amount of space, and equipment like a jumprope or even smaller hand-weights can easily fit into a travel bag.  The snow may be falling outside, but you can get your workout in inside when you bring these items with you.

Sticking to the same schedule you would adhere to while at home is important in order to maintain fitness levels, especially at this time of the year when the food on hand could wreak havoc on the balance you maintain at other times of the year.  Try to wake up and work out at the same time you usually do.  Even if the workout isn’t as extensive as it would be at home, you at least won’t have to start from scratch when the holidays are over.
