Why Hospitals Can Harm You

Forbes recently published an article stating the risks of having surgery at a hospital and why it’s not as safe as many think.  As highlighted in the article, for some people, a hospital stay could cause psychological harm and even lead to physical harm.

Even at the nation’s safest hospital, there is a risk of acquiring a serious infection, or being given narcotics or sedatives that are too powerful.  A hospital stay can increase the risk of avoidable conditions such as medical errors and bone fractures, etc.

Doctors, nurses, and hospital staff not washing their hands can put patients recovering from surgery at risk for a bacterial infection.  One bacterium that easily spread is called Clostridium difficile or “C-diff,” which can cause severe abdominal symptoms and diarrhea.

Forbes states that when a patient stays at a hospital for a prolonged period of time, problems with the financial burden of the visit as well as difficulty managing the treatment regimen may arise. However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

The article recommends several alternatives, including ambulatory, palliative and hospice care that are beneficial environments for care.

How is DISC different than a hospital?

DISC Sports & Spine Center is an ambulatory surgery center (ASC), committed to providing personalized treatment to patients suffering from sports injuries, orthopedic issues, and spine disorders.  In the ASC, DISC keeps the patient volume low, which allows for greater attention to individualized care.  After surgery, patients rest in custom designed recovery suites and private overnight rooms.  We encourage patients to start being mobile and take short walks as soon as possible after surgery. With specialized nursing protocols in place, patients are given a higher level of attention than similar hospital environments including but not limited to compression stockings, warm blankets, and bladder volume monitoring, which reduces the risk of a UTI and postoperative complications.  We study and monitor hand washing at our facility to ensure patient safety.

Our surgery center maintains over a 99% positive patient satisfaction rating and over a 97% rating of extremely satisfied patients.  DISC strives to deliver personalized care for you and your family, with in-depth patient education and many opportunities to ask questions. With a combination of the surgeon’s minimally invasive techniques, a high level of nursing care, and a specialized environment, patients safely return home the same day of surgery to rest in the comfort of their own home. Not to mention, all of the patient’s financial responsibility are established upfront so there are no surprises along the way. DISC is contracted with several insurance providers and offer flexible arrange that often deliver a more affordable healthcare product.
