As one of Southern California's few comprehensive hip specialists, Dr. Shore offers individualized care for the entire spectrum of hip conditions, with a treatment philosophy that incorporates both conservative treatment and advanced surgical interventions.
Dr. Brett Shore is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in comprehensive care of the hip joint, with extensive training and expertise in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder for adults and adolescents. Sharing DISC’s patient-first philosophy and high standard of care, Dr. Shore is a facilitator of healthy, active lifestyles and his treatment plans reflect this. His approach includes a risk-benefit analysis for each patient’s plan with the goal of keeping them as safely active and pain-free as possible.
Dr. Shore received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where he was the recipient of the George Khoury award for academic excellence in molecular biology and played rugby. He then went on to receive his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, where he was elected to the AOA honor society. Dr. Shore completed his orthopedic residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency in Boston, followed by a sports medicine fellowship with Dr. James Andrews at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.
Prior to joining DISC, Dr. Shore spent 11 years with Kaiser Permanente, where he was the Chief of Hip Preservation for Kaiser Southern California. He spent his sabbatical in Switzerland studying with some of the world experts in hip surgery, including Dr. Michael Leunig, Dr. Martin Beck and Dr. Moritz Tannast.
Dr. Shore’s comprehensive approach to hip care is unique; rather than specializing in either hip preservation OR hip replacement, he specializes in both. Unlike other hip surgeons, whose treatment algorithm is biased towards the conditions that they treat and the procedures that they perform, Dr. Shore’s ability to treat all manner of hip pathology allows him to offer his patients unbiased, individualized treatment plans.
Dr. Shore’s expertise in hip preservation includes arthroscopic and open treatment of femoroacetabular (hip) impingement, hip dysplasia, tears of the gluteus medius and minimus, hip bursitis, hamstring injuries and piriformis syndrome. When preservation of the hip joint is not an option due to conditions such as advanced arthritis or avascular necrosis, Dr. Shore performs total hip arthroplasty through a cosmetic bikini-style incision, utilizing an anterior muscle-sparing surgical approach. He has developed a profound knowledge in complex revision hip preservation surgery after spending years of evaluating and revising the failed hip arthroscopies referred to him.
Beyond the hip, Dr. Shore’s expertise includes sports medicine injuries of the knee and shoulder, including knee ligament tears (ACL, PLC, combined injuries), meniscus and cartilage injuries of the knee, rotator cuff tears, shoulder labrum tears and instability.
The author of numerous publications and posters, Dr. Shore is an editorial board member for the Journal of Arthroscopy. He is also the member of several professional organizations, including the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy, Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
When Dr. Shore isn’t busy returning his patients to their active lives, he enjoys spending time with his wife Dr. Amy Shore (anesthesiologist and medical director of DISC Surgery Center at Marina del Rey) and their three daughters. He is also a fitness enthusiast who lives an active lifestyle, including hiking, rock climbing, snowboarding, adventure seeking and live music.
