Dr. Michael Dorsi is an expert neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery, robotic techniques, and advanced neuropathic pain treatment, trained at Johns Hopkins and UCLA.
Dr. Michael Dorsi is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery, brain surgery and peripheral nerve surgery. Among the numerous procedures for which he has both a passion and clinical expertise are robotic spine surgery, spinal cord stimulation, artificial disc replacement and extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF). Dr. Dorsi is also adept in treating peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injuries, peripheral nerve tumors and brain tumors.
Recognizing that there is no “one size fits all” in spine surgeries, he offers a diverse range of surgical techniques that allow him to apply the right surgery to the right patient. Yet, the highly skilled surgeon is steadfast in his conservative, holistic approach to patient care. For Dr. Dorsi, surgery is often a last option and performed in the least invasive and most effective way possible when needed. He prides himself on his thorough review of each patient’s unique pathology, incorporating advanced imaging techniques into every part of the process, from diagnosis to treatment.
Dr. Dorsi is Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at UCLA and the Director of Community Neurosurgery and Peripheral Nerve Surgery. He has provided top-notch spine care to patients in Ventura County since 2012.
Dr. Dorsi earned his bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with the highest honors. He then earned a medical degree and completed his residency training in neurosurgery from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where – as a student -- he conducted groundbreaking research in the field of neuropathic pain. His research earned him the Ronald Tasker Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Harvey Cushing Award from the Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosurgery. He was also a research scholar of the American Association of Neurology.
Dr. Dorsi completed a research fellowship at the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine at UCLA focused on spinal cord injury and stem cell transplantation. Following residency, he was honored as the recipient of the Cloward Fellowship for Spine and Peripheral Nerve Surgery from the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and completed a one-year minimally invasive and complex spine fellowship at UCLA.
Nationally recognized as a leader in the field of spinal cord stimulation for the treatment of chronic pain, Dr. Dorsi has authored/co-authored several publications and remains active in clinical research focused on minimally invasive spine surgery and spinal cord stimulation. He has committed his career to evolving, learning new approaches that are both beneficial to patients and fulfilling to him as a surgeon.
When he’s not helping his patients regain function and relieving their pain, Dr. Dorsi is an avid skier and CrossFit enthusiast who enjoys traveling the world with his wife and kids and playing with his dog, Mocha the mini labradoodle.
