Minimally Invasive and Microscopic Surgery

Neel P. Shah, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with specialized training in minimally invasive and microscopic surgery. He is committed to using the latest, most proven techniques as well as the least invasive treatment options possible. Taking an individualized approach to his patients, Dr. Shah guides them to make the best decisions possible for their unique circumstances with the goal of relieving pain, restoring function and returning them to an optimum quality of life.

Dr. Shah incorporates minimally invasive, microsurgical and traditional open techniques to treat all disorders related to the spine, including degenerative, infectious, oncologic and traumatic. Prior to joining DISC, he was an Attending Physician with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where his clinical focus was minimally invasive spine surgery along with comprehensive spine care.

After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Shah wanted to follow in the footsteps of his mother and went on to medical school in New York City. Dr. Shah received his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) in 2010 from the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn. Here, he was the recipient of the Christopher Paldives, MD Award, recognizing the top medical student entering into orthopedic surgery. Dr. Shah completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. He then completed a highly coveted Spinal Surgery fellowship at the New England Baptist Hospital in a combined Orthopedics and Neurosurgical program.

Dr. Shah’s research has focused on the efficacy of minimally invasive spine surgery, perioperative patient optimization, pre-operative and post-operative pain management, and effective non-operative management of spinal disorders. He is the author of multiple book chapters, his work has been presented at international meetings and he has been published in numerous journals. 

In 2017, Dr. Shah received the Doctor’s Choice Award. Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the North American Spine Society.

When Dr. Shah isn’t busy returning his patients to top shape, you can find him honing his skiing skills down double-black diamonds or wiping out learning to surf. He enjoys spending his free time being active and outdoors with his wife, Puja, and their Australian Shepherd, Bodhi.
