In medical school, he was selected as an investigator in the Vanderbilt Medical Scholars Research Program, and received numerous grants to study cerebrovascular disease.

He completed his neurosurgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where he was appointed chief resident. During residency, he pursued an additional one-year enfolded sub specialty fellowship in reconstructive and minimally invasive spinal surgery.

His surgical philosophy is to use technology to personalize the approach, reduce unnecessary procedures, and enhance recovery after surgery. He spends time listening to his patients to determine the nature of their problem and how to best address it, with or without surgery.
