Dr. Joseph Horrigan's latest blog post covers middle school athletes who are being recruited by elite NCAA Division 1 colleges, including schools like USC, UCLA, LSU, Alabama, Washington, Miami, Ohio State University and Clemson University. In the article, Dr. Horrigan discusses why early specialization of young athletes could lead to overuse injuries, such as stress fractures, muscle strains and tears, sprains and joint injuries, tendinitis, early disc injuries and degeneration and increased possibility of concussions. Injuries can occur because in middle school, the athlete’s body is still not fully developed and may not be able to handle adult training loads. In addition, they may not be ready psychologically for that type of pressure. To read Dr. Horrigan’s article in Huffington Post, click here.
