Do Leg Extensions Have a Place in Your Workout?

The leg extension machine is a popular exercise among gym goers.  Dr. Joseph Horrigan describes the risk of performing that exercise, as it can contribute to knee pain or athritic changes to your knee.  In some cases, the exercise can prove helpful but for many, it is better to keep the leg extension to a minimum amount of weight and only one to two sets at most.  In the Huffington Post article, Dr. Horrigan talks about the problem with leg extension workouts, which puts maximum force on the back of the patella, or also known as the knee cap, as well as causing the lower leg bone to move forward on the thigh bone.  Both can cause cartilage damage and stretching the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
