How to Improve Your Posture

Posture. It’s a critically important yet often overlooked aspect of human health. Poor posture can lead to an array of health issues from joint pain to a collapsed chest. Even if it doesn’t lead to increased health risks, posture can affect appearance, confidence and non-verbal communication. Since most of us don’t want to spend all day fretting about how we contort our body, here are few easy ways to improve your posture in everyday life.

Shoulder Rolls: Take a few seconds at your desk or waiting in line to roll your shoulders back. Keeping your shoulders back helps open up your chest, making it easier for us to breathe.

Keep your chin up: Sound advice for when you’re having a bad day or when you want to counteract all the time you spend looking down at phones or keyboards. Looking down hunches the spine and neck, putting pressure on discs and causing pain.

Adjust your workstation: Another great way to avoid looking down all the time is to rearrange your computer, chair or keyboard. Try pulling things up to your eye line or consider a standing desk. Anything to help keep your neck and spine up and straight.

Don’t cross your legs: Crossing your legs might look cool and it may even feel more comfortable, but it’s not cool or comfortable for your spine. The correct way to sit is with both feet firmly on the floor so your back and spine can stay straight.

Go barefoot: While this option is not recommended at school or in the office, taking off your shoes and letting your body evenly distribute its weight throughout your feet can help your balance and improve posture.
