By the time most of us reach our 50s, we are familiar with the occasional stiffness, aches and pains that come with aging, as muscles, tendons and joints tighten and affect our range of motion. For women, menopause only compounds the issue, reducing the estrogen that once kept the body’s tissues hydrated and youthful. What can they do to find relieve and preserve mobility?
DISC’s Leia Rispoli, MD, a double board-certified interventional pain management specialist and physiatrist, shared her recommendations in a recent Woman’s World story:
“For women over 50 who are more at risk for developing osteoporosis post-menopause, it is vital to have an exercise routine,” said Dr. Rispoli. “Stretching is a way of preserving range of motion and encouraging movement that preserves muscle lengthening.”
Even two stretching sessions a week can significantly reduce discomfort, boost energy, and improve sleep—with many women noticing real results in as little as 30 days. Additionally, regular stretching can help you move more easily, feel less stressed, and stay independent in your daily life.
When asked about the latest trends in approaching stretching with her patients, Dr. Rispoli responded: “While the science of stretching itself may not be new, what’s exciting is how stretching fits into a trend toward ‘advanced motion preservation,’ which is especially important to active women as they age. Today, physicians are working to coordinate care at all stages of a patient’s journey, combining stretching with strength management.”
