In Dr. Joseph Horrigan's newest blog entry for The Huffington Post, "Young Women and ACL Injuries: How Proper Training is Vital to Minimize Risk," he talks about how proper training is key to reducing the risk of injury in young women.  The reason why young female athletes are prone to ACL tears may lie in failing to establish proper neuromuscualr control, or motor skills during strength and conditioning.  Female athletes are at risk for ACL tears and colleges today do not always give proper attention to this crucial element in strength training.    Dr. Horrigan provides several ways of minimizing risk.  One way is to make sure you are doing squats and lunges correctly.  In the piece, he describes the correct manner to perform the exercises.  Also, ACL injuries can occur when landing from a jump or changing positions quickly.  Dr. Horrigan provides detailed exercises that can be added to a strength training program,  and in turn, help reduce the risk of ACL tear injuries in all athletes.
