When an active runner gets pregnant, they may worry that they’re no longer going to be able to take part in their exercise of choice. A new article, however, relates how one can go about engaging in a safe running regimen in the midst of a pregnancy.
There’s one important thing that you must do prior to taking part in any exercise, be it running or anything else: talk with a doctor. He or she will be able to take into account your unique circumstances and guide you toward the types of actions that would be healthy for you and the baby.
If he or she gives you the go-ahead to run, then there are still things to take into account. First, your running should be light. The article linked to above notes that an individual should be able to carry on a conversation while running if need be. You also have to be aware of how your body is handling the exercise. Should dizziness, pain, weakness, or other dangers manifest, you may have to put a halt to your running and alert your doctor to what has happened, as a reevaluation may be in order.
The other big thing to take into account is that your running abilities may vary dramatically from day to day. Rather than get hung up on the benchmarks you set for yourself before the pregnancy, realize that your optimum exercise levels may be out of reach. That’s okay, as any exercise will be better than none at all, even if it’s not at the level you’re used to.
