Don't Be Daunted By Your First Few Weeks In The Gym

Now that we’re well into the New Year, you may have noticed that the gym that was so packed last week is already noticeably less crowded as people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions.  Hopefully you’re sticking with your regimen and are feeling pretty good about yourself for doing that.  However, you must make sure to stick to the right techniques at all times so that you don’t expose yourself to injury, especially during this early going when any health issue could be detrimental to your fitness goals.  Consider, then, the tips on hand from a new report.

Your first few days in the gym can be quite intimidating.   You’re looking around at people who seem to be lifting more than you, running farther than you, and acting like they know what they’re doing every step of the way.

But here’s the dirty little secret they don’t want you to know:  each of those persons had to start in the same position you’re in.  And at this time of the year, there’s a good chance most of the people at the gym are as daunted by the prospect of getting fit as you are.

Don’t get bent out of shape if you can’t reach the benchmarks that people around you are setting.  Focus on your own fitness regimen, not that of others, and don’t worry about others watching you, because chances are they’re too focused on themselves to look down their noses at your technique.

When you get in this mindset, you help yourself avoid some of the typical woes that plague persons new to the gym.  Keep the weight you’re lifting in check, never going beyond what you’re safely capable of achieving.  That way lies strains, sprains, and excessive fatigue.

Don’t think that just because someone near you is doing something one way means that’s the right technique for you.  Every person is unique, and it’s always best to get the basics down first so that you can further reduce injury exposure.  Also don’t think that you have to rush through a workout just because someone seems like they’re waiting impatiently.  Take the time you need to execute your workout with the proper form.

It’s a great idea to work with a personal trainer.  Even a couple of sessions can give you a basic introduction to the machines that you’re most keen on and the fitness regimen that will work best for you.  That way, you know you have a workout baseline that you can build off of, whether you have guidance or not.

Finally, build your workout up over the course of months and years, not days.  Push yourself, but don’t push yourself too far.
