Excessively High Heels Can Be Detrimental To Foot Health

Although picking out the right athletic shoe is certainly important, there’s another type of shoe that also can cause its fair share of pain if it doesn’t fit properly:  high heels.  Wearing an uncomfortable high heel can be detrimental to foot health, causing injuries over the course of time that won’t be easily corrected.  The good news is that the American Podiatric Medical Association has ideas on how to pick out the right high heel and avoid foot pain and injuries in the process.  Those insights are included in a new report.

First off, realize that the higher the shoe is, the more dangerous it’s going to be for your health.  Any more than three inches and you can expect your balance to shift forward in an unnatural way, forcing you to compensate by placing all of your weight on the front part of your foot, where it’s not really supposed to be.  Instead, you should think about going shorter with your heel, opting for a heel that’s an inch or less in size in order to protect your foot.

Another common type of heel that can actually prove injurious is one that comes with a platform.  Because the entirety of your foot is technically off the ground, it may be difficult to find your center of balance.  Your ankle is more inclined to slip to either side, causing a serious sprain in the process.  Try to limit platform height at the same time as heel height.
