Getting to Know Dr. Hamid Mir

For orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Hamid Mir, his goal is helping people get their lives back post injury.

“There are many cases where the patient comes in a wheelchair, unable to walk, whether it’s an initial injury in a young patient or another surgeon has operated on and the surgery wasn’t successful and the patient is very depressed and hopeless,” Dr. Mir said.

“After an operation, the problem is fixed and you’ve given them their life back.”

Dr. Mir focuses on a wide range of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal conditions, from stenosis, fracture, infection and scoliosis to revision and complex reconstructions.

Born in Tehran, Iran, Dr. Mir grew up in La Jolla, California, and decided to go to nearby University of California, San Diego for his undergraduate studies.  While there, he majored in chemistry and biology and became interested in the human body.

“When I took my first physiology course, I was completely mesmerized by physiology of the body and it got my interest into medicine,” Dr. Mir said.

Dr. Mir attended the State University of New York Health Science Center School of Medicine.  While at medical school, he had a rotation in orthopedics, which peaked his interest.  During the rotation, he witnessed a wide array of surgeries, from macro surgeries, big joint replacements, microsurgery such as spine or hand surgery; it was then that he decided to specialize in orthopedics.

After an orthopedic residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Shriner’s Hospital, Dr. Mir headed west to complete a fellowship in complex spine surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in 2004.

During his training at Cedars, he met Dr. Robert S. Bray, Jr.  By fall 2011, Dr. Mir joined DISC in Newport Beach.  Although he resides in Orange County, Dr. Mir also practices at the DISC Marina del Rey office.

“Spine surgery is a very delicate surgery.  It can make a big difference in patients’ lives if done correctly,” Dr. Mir said.  “It’s very gratifying helping people and I just enjoy what I’m doing.”

In addition to spending time with his wife and daughter, Dr. Mir also practices yoga, something he does several times a week.  Out of the office, Dr. Mir likes to take part in outdoor activities, including playing tennis and watersports.
