Whether you made working out more a New Year’s Resolution or not, it’s absolutely vital that you maintain an active lifestyle in 2014 and beyond. Nobody is saying that you have be an Olympic weightlifter or a pristine example of what the human form could be, but there are steps to take to stay healthy for years to come.
Rather than thinking of the tips available in a new report as a means to carry on a resolution, get in the habit of making them just another part of your life. In that way, exercise becomes less something to be conquered and more a part of your routine.
The problem in the modern world is that so many of us work jobs that require us to be indoors sitting in a chair all day. Unless we take the initiative, there are scant few situations where we’re forced to engage in physical activity.
In such an environment, you want to do whatever you can to increase your pulse rate and get your body active. If you find that you lack the time, think about walking or biking to work, as even doing this a few times a week will allow your body to get the exercise it needs to stay healthy.
You can help yourself out while you’re at work too. Even escaping from your cubicle or office for 15 minutes a couple times a day can be worthwhile. During these times, take a walk around the building or in a park area. If you work on the third or fourth floor, get in the habit of using the stairwell. When you’re in your office, stretch on a regular basis so that your muscles remain limber.
Of course, these can only go so far; to truly get your body moving in a way that benefits your health, you may have to go to the gym. When you do this, make things easy on yourself. Maybe running four miles a day or lifting hundreds of pounds of weight at a time aren’t for you; that’s fine. Find something that you do enjoy. Maybe swimming or an elliptical machine make you feel better about yourself than those other activities. There’s still something to be said for balance, so don’t discount strength training programs and other workouts entirely. Instead, just make sure to save some of the more strenuous activity for those things you like.
Finally, don’t think that you have to put all of this on yourself. Invite loved ones to join you in your activities. You may find that they’ve been waiting for such an invitation to improve their own health. And when all else fails, get a trainer who can help you develop and stick to a regimen suitable for you.
