Optimize Every Workout For Productivity and Injury Prevention

Much must go into a workout to ensure that such a bout of physical activity is worthwhile.  More than just heading out the door and running for a couple miles, people serious about improving their physical health will engage in a number of tactics prior to, during, and after a workout.  For those that want to start getting more out of their exercise, it might help to take a look at some of the tips contained in a new report out of New Zealand.

The biggest challenge for many is settling on a regimen that will test their mettle while at the same time not leaving them so burnt out that the thought of working out at all within the next week is painful.  It’s best to ratchet up the intensity on basically a weekly basis.  That way, your body is always in a process of acclimating to what you’re putting it through while being tested a little more on a sliding scale.

You should also supplement a good run with various other types of exercises.  Running is great, but focusing only on running may come at the detriment of certain sections of the body.  Do some strength training every once in awhile under the watchful eye of a personal trainer, and if you’re used to jogging, cut the typical run short and focus on doing a few sprints.  Keep your body on its proverbial toes.

Many people mistakenly believe that working with a trainer is going to be cost-prohibitive, but the cost really depends on what you hope to get out of it.  Even if you don’t work with a trainer on a regular basis, looking into what your local gym has to offer for even a couple of sessions could be invaluable.  He or she can explain what exercises would be most beneficial to you and what techniques could help you achieve more.  If you’re doing something wrong that puts you at risk for injury, this could also be corrected.  A lengthier investment will pay more dividends, but even a couple sessions will help you out.

The other thing that can hinder a workout is all those things surrounding it.  The right diet can allow one to go from sluggish to ready to work.  Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can allow one to push themselves further.  And sleeping for eight hours a night or more ensures the necessary amount of rest is obtained.

These things don’t just help you do more; they help you avoid injury.  Nutrition and rest are more important to injury prevention than perhaps anything else, and any workout that doesn’t keep these things in mind is immediately at a disadvantage.
