Protect Your Back During Last-Minute Spring Cleaning

There are still a few weeks to go until summer hits, which means there’s still time for people to engage in spring cleaning.  If this activity is in your plans in the coming days, then you’ll want to make sure that you’re protecting your back from harm.  A new report offers a couple of hints in this regard.

One of the biggest hazards is simply trying to move something that’s excessively large.  So that you can minimize the length of time in which you’ll be hoisting the object, clear yourself a path beforehand.  That way, you’ll be able to walk straight and you won’t need to set the object down to do some rearranging.

Once it actually comes time to lift, remember to put the weight on your legs rather than your back.  Don’t bend or twist when you’re in the middle of transport.  Instead, simply stand up with your back ramrod straight, and then move forward with the item in your hands until you’ve reached your destination.

You also want to minimize reaching motions, which can put a lot of strain on your back and your arm muscles.  Instead, pull the box in as close to your body as you can, and if ever there comes  a point where you have to reach excessively far, enlist the assistance of another individual or invest in a step ladder that will offer you an easier route to the object’s final resting place.
