Research Highlights Airway Management Trends In Cervical Spine Surgery

Recent research featured in the Spine journal took a look at those instances of cervical spine surgery (neck surgery) that led to the patient in question having to undergo postoperative airway management.  In order conduct their study, the researchers examined 8,648 operations that took place between 2006 and 2011.   They discovered that the usage of airway management was more likely if the patient tended to be of an older age, if he or she had been through dialysis, or if that persons was known to suffer from cardiac disease.  When airway management took place, the risk of complications or an additional procedure also went up.  It should be noted, though, that of the nearly 9,000 operations carried out, only 56 people had to be reintubated, while ventilation needed to be provided to 54 persons.
