Speed Improvements Require Hard Work

Some people don’t want to simply maintain their current thresholds; they want to constantly improve their fitness levels until they reach peak condition.  When it comes to running, that might mean that you have to train in a way that goes beyond just traveling a certain distance and time.  A new report out of Australia highlights how to improve your running speed through proper training, and you’ll want to keep these tips in mind if you seek to break your own personal records.

One way to improve your body’s ability to cope with high speeds is to interject moments of sprinting or not-quite-sprinting into your regimen.  After a few of these minute-long bursts of intense activity, you’re going to get winded and wonder what you got yourself into, but if you can keep jogging in the interim between those sprints, you may be able to improve your time rapidly.

Changing up where you’re running could also help.  If you’re used to a treadmill or a track, then the terrain is probably pretty flat.  But if there’s someplace near to you that you could run hills, head over there for a run.  If you can run up a steep hill, you can run just about anywhere, and suddenly those flat stretches will seem like a breeze.

Of course, always pay attention to your body and let off the throttle if your body is screaming at you to rest.  Pushing yourself too far could undo everything you’ve worked toward.
