Throughout the week, we’ve addressed some of the ways that new and experienced runners can stave off the threat of injury. However, even a little bit of walking can be beneficial to those persons who are unable to jog on a regular basis.
A new report out of State College, Pennsylvania highlights how seniors can be assisted with a thorough walking regimen. It also goes into how to improve said workout. What you’ll find is that walking every day with the proper steps in mind will help you maintain good health for years to come.
Although the ideal walking-based workout will have you moving around for a good half hour, even less than that is better than nothing. Start by simply walking around your home, getting outside on the sidewalk if you can. Once you’ve grown comfortable with the amount of time you walk, you can pick up the pace and add a couple minutes to your workout.
After some time goes by, you’ll hopefully be at a place where you’re comfortable walking around the entire neighborhood. This is where another type of challenge sets in: boredom. Try to inject some excitement into the walk by investing in a device that can measure your steps, taking new routes, and having people to walk with. This can be accomplished by inviting people along your route or looking into the group walking opportunities in your area.
