Youth Baseball Injuries Require Parental Attention

If your children are in the middle of baseball season, you’ll want to make sure that they are taking part in the game in a way that doesn’t leave them open to injury.  Thankfully, a new report highlights some of the ways you can encourage safety at every turn.

One of the most important things to realize is that student athletes shouldn’t be pushed past their limits, an act that seems all too common in baseball as competition grows fierce.  The mechanics of throwing a baseball are sometimes in complete opposition to comfortable motion, and if endured for an extended period of time, your child’s arm could sustain serious damage.

Instead, keep an eye on your child and ask how their arm feels.  If your child pitches, make sure you speak with the team’s coach so that you can reach an understanding about what’s going to be expected of them.  A pitcher needs ample rest and strict limits on how many times they can throw.  Health is more important than competition, especially at the youth level.

In addition, you should also encourage your child to be attentive to their surroundings while they’re out on the field of play.  Have them look around where they’re positioned to identify tripping obstacles, and ask that they always be cognizant of what’s going on at the plate.  Once a ball is hit or thrown, it’s going to be speeding by quickly, and you don’t want your child to suffer a concussion.
