Dr. Mesiwala in SpineUniverse

Dr. Mesiwala was quoted extensively as an expert in a feature story on SpineUniverse. In the piece, Dr. Mesiwala discusses common cervical spine injuries from sports:

"[The load] is then transmitted downward in an axial fashion through the cervical spine [or neck region]. Under normal circumstances, the cervical spine can dissipate much of the force through the paravertebral muscles, discs, and the normal curvature of the spine.

When the spine is flexed forward at approximately 30 degrees, it is at the greatest risk of injury because the normal curvature is straightened. This diminishes the ability of the structures in the neck to dissipate the axial forces that are being applied."
